The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry is home to the German Type IX submarine U-505, which was forced to the surface and captured in the mid-Atlantic on 04JUN44. The submarine is open to guided tours as part of a premium package which is well worth the cost. Visitors on a tighter schedule or budget may inspect the exterior of the submarine and view many associated pieces of equipment and related exhibits. One of the displays is a diorama of the two ships most active in the capture of the U-505, the Casablanca class escort carrier USS Guadalcanal (CVE-60) and the Edsall class destroyer escort USS Pillsbury (DE-133). The ships are modeled in 1/72 scale and are very well executed. The display is under glass and lighting is not optimal for photography, so apologies in advance for any deficit in picture quality.
