i grew up within walking distance of the Museum of Science and Industry, and toured the 505 dozens of times, most recently about 20 years ago, just before she was moved to her current exhibit. On that last tour the boat had been curated and restored to represent her as she may have been on the first day of a patrol (minus the grunge and reek as she’d have after weeks at sea!) The museum had also employed a docent who actually knew a lot about the boat, crew, and history of the U-boat service. i was present (although as an infant in my family’s arms) the day the 505 was hauled up from Lake Michigan to the Museum. Thank you for the link to this post!

I live within driving distance, and have been to the U-505 several times over the years. They have done a good job with the presentation in the “sub pen”. Never get tired of seeing her!

When I was 9 or 10 back in 1956, my mother would kick us out of the house. We’d go to the Museum to get warm. I’ve probably been through the sub 100 times. We may even have run into one another. I went to Bret Harte Elementary school. 🙂
