Hasegawa Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero of Tetsuzo Iwamoto in 1/72 Scale

The second leading scorer of the Imperial Japanese Navy with 80 victories, Tetsuzo Iwamoto fought throughout the Pacific War and survived.  During his first combat on 25FEB38 he was credited with five Chinese aircraft downed over Nanking.  The model depicts the aircraft he flew from the carrier Zuikaku at Pearl Harbor and the Coral Sea.

  1. Thanks! I haven’t looked at those kit markings in so long, I forgot what came in it aside from some markings for Sakai and a later war A6M2 unit that got chewed up in the Marianas Turkey shoot.

      1. It looks great that way. The only thing I have against, is it makes side by side comparisons a little trickier. But the individual display looks awesome!

      2. I cheat so I can have it both ways. There are pins in the base which fit into holes in the wheels, you can slide it off the base when you want. It works better than I thought it would.

      1. Agreed – I think the hint of caramel colour is far better than the hint of pistachio. Model Master is not around here so I’ll have to see if I can get something close and start working with it. Thanks for the tip!!

  2. Jeff, I forgot to ask, is this build from a Tamiya, FM, or Hasegawa kit? I want to use some Tamiya decals on a FM kit, and my only concerns are the circumference of the fuselage and the stripes that go around it.

    1. This one is the Hasegawa kit. You should be OK swapping decals as the Tamiya and FM kits match very well. Also, the carrier ID fuselage stripes are gapped on the underside, not continuous, so minor differences in length would not be noticeable.

      1. Thanks! I’ve got a Tamiya boxing that contains decals for a Zeke during the Battle of Santa Cruz, and I wanted to use one of my FM kits for it since it’s a carrier-borne fighter and I want to model it with the wing tips up, etc.
