Re: the Malta “blue” Spitfires – if you are thinking these would have been from those ferried on USS Wasp in April/May 1942, there would have been no Intermediate Blue available then, since at the time it didn’t exist yet. The Navy didn’t start using the tri-color scheme for another year.

Well versed in the USN colors, I’ve done several posts on them. I’m not as well versed on the Malta blues, but from what I’ve read there is no accepted consensus on what colors or local mixes were used. I have guessed the “dark blue” might have been close to Insignia Blue, the “light blue” appears to be more than one tone, which may include USN Blue Gray on some aircraft but not others. Some also say the lighter blues were misted over one or both colors of the standard RAF schemes. It’s interesting to compare the profile artists interpretations of the same aircraft.
