This is the seaplane tender USS Gillis (AVD12) seen in Massacre Bay, Attu, Alaska on 21JUN43. In addition to the lend/lease of 50 old four-stack destroyers to England, during the Second World War the U.S. Navy converted dozens of the old Clemson-Wickes destroyers to perform other missions. The old Destroyers became Minesweepers, Attack Transports, or Seaplane Tenders, as seen here. They were also used to support PT boats, like the three 78’ Higgins-types of Motor Torpedo Squadron 13 moored alongside. There is a PBY-5 Catalina flying boat refueling astern.

That is awesome, so much to see and glean from this. I can see great diorama potential in 1/72nd with either a PBY or a PT boat and modeling a portion of the tender.

LOL, yeah! Some of us have:
a) very limited scratch-building skills, and
b) very limited display space.

Nice picture, Jeff! 🙂 I’m a big fan of the four-stackers in whatever form they served!

If I ever started a model company, a series of four-stacker versions would be my first kits.
