This SOC Seagull was assigned to VCS-5 and operated from the heavy cruiser USS Portland (CA-33) during the Battle of Midway in June, 1942. The kit is the 1969 Hasegawa release with decals from Starfighter sheet 72-136.

Simply wonderful! I still don’t see how you do the antennae.

The Nitinol is stiff enough you can anchor the horizontal part to the rudder and then take the long sections to that. I need to clean up the junction a bit before I take it to a show.

From where are you sourcing your Nitinol? What size are you using?

I’ve gotten Nitinol from several sources, I think the last was McMaster-Carr. It pays to shop around though. I use 0.005″ for rigging and 0.004″ for antenna, but there’s not much difference.

Jeff, how did you achieve that nice, subtle color variation on the top wing?

I spray the camo on in thin coats in the direction of airflow. The Mr. Surfacer is gray, if you let it show through a little you get that effect. You can get the same effect by altering the color with a drop of white or tan if you like, just keep it thin.

Thanks, the natural light and shadows make for good pictures, provided the wind is not too strong!

Now that is really nice, Jeff! 🙂 I think I prefer it to your yellow wings version and that’s saying something! I never realised that there was a period when camouflaged aircraft carried the plain white-on-blue star on both wing surfaces.

The SOC (and Kingfisher) are interesting in that you can find them in anything from the yellow wings schemes all the way through the graded scheme.

Beautiful little airplane. And one that’s still lacking in 1/48!

Surprised that nobody has released on in 1/48, but then Hasegawa’s 1/72 offering is over 50 years old!

There are a couple places that are nice for taking the outdoor photos nearby, this one is in a local park. It draws some curious kids if I’m there long enough.

😅😅😅I’m sure it would , I have taken some out in front of our place where it’s just gravel And dust and I’m sure farmers driving by wonder what on earth I’m doing crouched down with a camera 🤔.
