Speeding production was a priority for all the combatants, even if it is counter intuitive to us today. Soviet tank production was one of the best examples.
Very true. I was also thinking of the British decision to keep the 2pdr Anti tank gun in production because the factories were tooled up for it after so many were lost in France 1940, even though the far superior 6pdr ATG was ready to go.
Quite interesting as I have the gun turrets of an unbuilt Monogram 1/48 scale B-24. But I would have to convert one of the two B-17 Gs I have though. I have decided to reblog your post on Lest We Forget II.

A great post from Jeff “Inch High” Groves on something I had never heard of. I was aware of the YB-40, but not this.
Keep in mind that the YB-40 project and the Dreamboat were concurrent, and that many of the YB-40 innovations were incorporated into the B-17G (like the Bendix chin turret and Cheyenne tail turret). IMHO the most desirable modification remaining was the additional dorsal turret in the radio compartment and deletion of the two waist gun positions.
WHENEVER ANY FORM OF GOVERNMENT BECOMES DESTRUCTIVE OF THESE ENDS (LIFE,LIBERTY,AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS) IT IS THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO ALTER OR ABOLISH IT, AND TO INSTITUTE A NEW GOVERNMENT― Thomas Jefferson
Interesting post thanks.
Not the first time I’ve read about in WW2 that better weapons weren’t made to keep te production lines going.
Cheers,
Pete.
